Recreation uses in Hyalite Canyon are governed by the Gallatin Travel Plan. The travel plan designates different uses on many of Hyalite’s roads and trails in the winter versus what is allowed in the summer. For example, many roads that are open to passenger vehicles in the summer and fall are gated in the winter to provide winter recreation opportunities. Many roads and trails in Hyalite are designated as ski trails in winter. Ski trails are marked with blue diamonds, and identified on the Hyalite Winter Recreation Map. Under the travel plan, wheeled vehicles (including bicycles) are not allowed on marked or groomed ski trails from December 2 - April 15. Most of the winter trails in Hyalite are designated ski trails.

Fat bikes are allowed in two areas of Hyalite. The best place to ride a fat bike in Hyalite is in the northern portion of Moser (go left at the Moser Creek/Moser Jumpoff junction). Fat bikes are also allowed on the Hyalite Lake Trail #427 (Grotto Falls).

There are many fun places to ride fat bikes on the Bozeman Ranger District outside of Hyalite Canyon. Storm Castle road, Flathead Pass road, Leverich Canyon trail, Chestnut Mountain trail, and many of the trails on the west side of the Bridgers are all great places for fat biking! Southwest Montana Mountain Bike Association grooms fat bike routes in Moser and Glen Lake Rotary Park - follow them on social media for grooming reports! Fat bikes are also allowed on any trail that is open to snowmobiles. If you are riding on a groomed snowmobile trail, you must purchase a Trail Pass from Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks.
