Hunting in Hyalite

By Lexi Olson

With Montana’s general rifle season for deer and elk opening at first light on October 26, recreationalists may find themselves among camo-clad hunters venturing in Hyalite Canyon in hopes of a harvest. While hunting is permitted in Hyalite, recreational shooting is prohibited. A permanent order prohibited recreational shooting as of August 2024 and remains in place.

If you plan on recreating in Hyalite during the rifle hunting season (October 26-December 1), be sure to take a few extra steps to ensure a safe visit for all.

Wear Bright Colors

There’s a reason hunters wear blaze orange. The bright color makes hunters stand out to others in the field, helping to prevent accidents. The orange is not visible to animals, but is easy to see for humans amongst foliage and camo. When you head outside this fall, opt for a bright colored jacket or vest to make sure you are visible from a distance. And don’t forget this applies to dogs too! Bright-colored bandanas, harnesses, and collars can keep your pooch safe and visible. If your furry friend doesn’t have an orange garment, 406 Dogs in Orange is a local nonprofit that provides free orange bandanas.

Stay on Designated Trails

While you may see some hunters hiking in on trails, you probably won’t see them actively hunting on the trails. To obtain better vantage points and locate game, hunters often travel off-trail. By staying on designated trails, you reduce your risk of entering into an area where someone may be hunting, all while minimizing your impact.

Time Your Outing

Wildlife is typically most active at dawn and dusk, and is a popular time for hunters as well. Enjoy the sunshine while you can and head into Hyalite during the daytime when the visibility is better and hunting activity is low.

Fall is a breathtaking time in Hyalite, with crisp air, vibrant foliage, and snow-capped peaks. By following these safety practices, you can enjoy all the beauty autumn has to offer in Hyalite while having a safe experience. Whether you’re hiking, biking, hunting, or simply soaking in the scenery, enjoy this quiet and transitional time of year in the canyon.
