Christmas Tree Cutting Season is Here!

By Nan Brandenbergerpayne

Many of us look forward to harvesting a Christmas tree in Hyalite Canyon.  Before you go, here are some things to know.

A permit is needed from the Custer Gallatin National, Bozeman district. These $5.00 permits can be purchased online through www.recreation.gov , Bozeman District or at the Christmas Stroll on Dec. 7 at the Forest Service booth.

Before heading out, check the weather forecast to insure appropriate clothing for the outing. There is no cell service in the canyon.

Consider taking a measuring tape (you may cut a tree 1 - 12 feet tall), a handsaw for cutting the tree, a tarp or sled and ropes to haul out the tree.

Select a tree from a densely forested area which allows for more growth for the remaining trees.

Cut the entire tree leaving a maximum of a 6 inch stump. Lop and scatter branches that are left on the stump after harvesting your tree.

Once you have found the perfect tree, or in our case, the perfect salvaged tree, load it on a tarp, sled or just carry it out.

Decorate and enjoy the Holidays!
